If I’m working extra hours for the holidays will I be paid?

The holidays are a busy time, especially if you’re in the business of retail or hospitality. You may find yourself working well over the minimum 40 hours a week and working overtime. The question is you might be entitled to overtime pay and you should know your rights. If you’re working over 40 hours, the general rule is you must be paid at least time and a half, one-half your hourly wage. That’s true even if you’re on salary. That’s a common myth.

The real issue becomes whether you fall into one of the exemptions for overtime. Typically, a retail employee, a restaurant employee, would not fall into any exemptions.
